The New York Mets placed right-hander Sean Reid-Foley on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right shoulder impingement, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.Com:
“Mets reliever Sean Reid-Foley has been placed on the IL due to a right shoulder impingement. He had a similar injury earlier this year.
Danny Young back up to the bullpen.”
The move to the injured list is retroactive to Thursday for Reid-Foley, who started the season dealing with the same injury.
Reid-Foley allowed one hit in one-third on an inning of relief for the Mets in a blown save against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
He has been relatively effective for the Mets this season, putting up a 1.66 ERA in 21.2 innings (23 appearances). Interestingly, Reid-Foley has allowed 10 runs in his 21.2 innings, but just four of them have been earned.
Originally a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Reid-Foley was dealt along with Yennsy Díaz and Josh Winckowski to the Mets for Steven Matz ahead of the 2021 season.
In his seven-year career, Reid-Foley has amassed an 8-12 record with a 4.10 ERA in 131.2 career innings of work.
Losing a reliable arm like Reid-Foley is certainly a big blow for the Mets' bullpen, but getting Young back into the mix should help make up for that loss.
Young was optioned back to Triple-A following the Mets' game against the Marlins on June 12 when star closer Edwin Diaz returned from the IL.
Can Mets continue winning ways without Sean Reid-Foley?
After an incredibly poor start to the season that saw team president David Stearns question his team's makeup, the Mets have started playing winning baseball.
The Mets have won 12 of their last 15 games to move to within three games of .500. While New York won't be able to catch the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East, the team is now just 1.5 games out of the NL Wild Card race.
Last month, Stearns wasn't optimistic about his team's chances
‘Look, we haven't played like a playoff team, and I think that's a reality of how we've played here through the first 50 games. That doesn't mean we won't, but we gotta show it. I think we have a group of players that is very committed to that goal that is determined to play better. But until we show it, it's a reasonable question.'”
Trade rumors for Mets star Pete Alonso are still rumbling. It's possible that their best course of action to trade Alonso and restock the farm system but, should the team keep winning, the likelihood that the team decides to keep him beyond the July 30 trade deadline increases.
Alonso will hit free agency this winter after six productive seasons with the Mets. They have yet to sign a contract extension and it doesn’t seem all that likely that there’s one on the way before the end of the season.
