Well, this certainly took a turn for the worst. A game between two Double-A teams in the MLB got brutal quickly, as both teams engaged in a major bench-clearing brawl after players exchanged words. This is a crazy scene that has everything you see in a classic fight and then some.
The incident happened in an MLB Double-A game between the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and the Portland Sea Dogs. Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed (playing for the Ponies) was hit by a pitch from Sea Dogs pitcher Marcel Renteria. While walking to first base, Renteria seemed to hurl some nasty words to Reed. We know it wasn’t anything good, because Reed immediately charged at the pitcher and hit him with a nasty hook. (via Jomboy Media)
This immediately prompted a bench-clearing from both sides, as the two teams were eager to get back at each other. Renteria, after getting downed by Reed, immediately attacked another Ponies player, getting hurt in the process. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed, and the match continued. It’s one of the first actual brawls we’ve seen in a while in the MLB, both from the Majors and the Minors.
The Portland Sea Dogs used this incident to rally their troops. scoring at least one run in the next five innings to close out the game 12 – 5 against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Both teams will now await the inevitable punishment that the MLB will inflict on them. While brawls like this are interesting for viewers, it sets a bad precedent for the league if the keep allowing this. Expect stiff fines for both teams, especially for the two instigators Reed and Renteria.
