The Houston Astros are currently focused on preparing for Game 7 of the ALCS. Houston also has big offseason plans for Jose Altuve according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“The Houston Astros plan to do everything possible to lock up All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve to a contract extension to keep him in the organization for the duration of his career,” Nightengale recently reported.

Altuve won't hit free agency until after the 2024 season. Still, the Astros may opt to extend him following the '23 playoffs. He's a franchise superstar who is second all-time in postseason home runs. The Astros clearly understand just how valuable he is to their organization.

Nightengale also revealed an interesting report about Alex Bregman's future with Houston in addition to Jose Altuve.

The Astros are probably open to the idea of signing Bregman to an extension. However, Houston is reportedly placing their focus “squarely on Altuve,” according to Nightengale.

Bregman will also hit free agency following the 2024 campaign and is another key player for Houston. It will be intriguing to see how aggressive the Astros are in possible Bregman extension talks.

Bregman is still only 29-years old. His numbers have declined a bit in recent seasons, but Bregman is still a reliable third baseman in the big leagues.

Altuve, on the other hand, is already 33-years old. The star second baseman is still one of the better players in baseball though. He dealt with injury concerns in 2023, but Altuve is an eight-time All-Star with a proven track record. Houston wants to ensure that Jose Altuve will finish his career with the Astros.

In the end, despite Houston's focus reportedly being on Altuve, the Astros will likely want to keep both players on the team for the foreseeable future.

For now, the Astros will try to clinch yet another World Series berth on Monday in Game 7 of the ALCS versus the Texas Rangers.
