Two underperforming NL East teams have very different mindsets as the August 1 MLB trade deadline approaches. With the New York Mets continuing their glorious spiral, they've landed in the sellers market. The Philadelphia Phillies, on the other hand, are poised to make a push for a Wild Card spot. With those mindsets established, the Phillies have interest in trading for Mets outfielder Tommy Pham, according to Bob Nightengale.

The Mets are 46-52, 7 games behind the third Wild Card spot held by the San Francisco Giants. That's not necessarily out of reach, but the Mets have accepted their fate. Every time they start to turn things around, it doesn't last long. “The Mets aren't going to make the playoffs, and they know it,” Nightengale wrote.

The Phillies are just 1 game behind the Giants, at 52-46. Like the Mets, they have a lot of elite talents in Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and more that aren't playing quite up to par. However, they've at least won enough games to not be an embarrassment. If Philadelphia makes the playoffs, they can likely play with anyone.

After coming up short in the World Series against the Houston Astros last year, it makes sense for the Phillies to be buyers to try and maximize this core at this year's MLB trade deadline.

They recently moved 2x MVP Bryce Harper to first base and are in the market for a right-handed outfielder. With the Mets shopping Tommy Pham, along with several other starters, Pham could be a good fit in Philadelphia.

The 35-year-old is hitting .272 with nine home runs and a solid OPS+ of 129. Pham is on a 1-year deal worth $6 million, so he would be an affordable rental that could add some nice depth for the Phillies as they push to sneak into the playoffs.
