Mize originally reported “elbow soreness” after Thursday's start against the Royals, leading to further examination. This news comes as a blow to the Tigers and has to be concerning to fans. While they seem unlikely to even reach the playoffs, Mize still figures to be a big part of this year's team.
The 24-year old was selected first overall in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Auburn. Mize has yet to live up to expectations, although things began to trend in the right direction last season.
Article Continues BelowAfter a 6.99 ERA across seven starts in 2020, Mize went 7-9 with a 3.71 ERA last season. He made improvements in nearly every statistical category, including walks, hits, and home runs allowed. Perhaps most importantly, he gave the Tigers 150.1 innings, proving he could withstand the duration of an MLB season.
In two starts this season, Mize has allowed 13 hits and six runs across 10 innings of work. Although it seems to just be an elbow strain at the moment, Mize has had problems with it in the past in his right arm, dating back to 2019. A quick recovery is crucial to continuing his growth and helping the Tigers make a playoff push.
The injury is an early setback for Mize's career and the prospects of the Tigers season. In a best case scenario, Mize would only miss two starts. On the contrary, one has to hope it doesn't lead to bigger things, like Tommy John surgery.
