The San Diego Padres went from World Series contender to fringe Wild Card team in just a matter of weeks as they have dealt with injuries and subpar pitching. Well, the Padres made a huge move on Monday morning, dismissing pitching coach Larry Rothschild, according to the Padres official account.

This is a surprise, only considering the rash injuries this pitching staff has dealt with during the season. Yu Darvish is on the IL, as well as Chris Paddack. Adrian Morejon has been out since the start of the year, and Mike Clevinger won't return until 2022. The Padres also added Jake Arrieta, who went to the IL after just one start.

Nonetheless, Rothschild seems to be the scapegoat for this Padres team that has gone 2-9 in their past 11 games.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Ben Fritz will take over for Rothschild for the remainder of the season as Jayce Tingler's squad does whatever it takes to sneak into the playoffs.

The Padres are currently a game back of the Cincinnati Reds for the second Wild Card spot and are in a serious slump. Could this be the move that turns it around for San Diego?

Nobody knows, but the timeliness of this move calls for desperation as they try and gain ground on the race for the Wild Card spot.
