The St. Louis Cardinals (2-3) are the latest Major League Baseball club to be hit with an outbreak of the coronavirus. As a result, the team's four-game series at the Detroit Tigers (5-5) has been postponed.

“The Cardinals have had 13 members of the organization test positive for COVID-19 in the last week, including seven players and six staff members,” MLB said in a statement. “The Club, which has been in quarantine since Thursday, will stay in Milwaukee and their personnel will continue to be tested daily. The tentative plan is for the team to resume its regular schedule on Friday against the Chicago Cubs in St. Louis.”

The series with Detroit was originally scheduled as a home-and-home, but was then moved to Detroit, with a doubleheader set for Wednesday. The Cards' weekend series with Milwaukee was postponed after four positive tests on Saturday.

St. Louis joins the Miami Marlins as teams to suffer major COVID-19 outbreaks since the 2020 season began on July 20. The Marlins (2-1) have had 20 total positive tests within their clubhouse since MLB Opening Day — forcing their series with the Washington Nationals (3-4) and Baltimore Orioles (5-3) to be postponed. They haven't played since July 26, though they're scheduled to face the Orioles on Tuesday.

If there's a silver lining here, it's that none of the Cardinals' positives have resulted in hospitalizations:

As a consequence of the Cardinals' outbreak, and in a blow to fans of nostalgia, the upcoming “Field of Dreams” game set to take place in Iowa on Aug. 13 will be put off until 2021. St. Louis was slated to face the Chicago White Sox (5-4) in Dyersville. The White Sox are reportedly still planning on participating in the game next season, though their opponent is TBD.
