The Chicago Bears have found plenty of success during their history, but they could have had even more if it wasn't for some heartbreaking moments. Let's look at times when seasons were ended too early and the course of Bears history was changed forever.

Here are the five most heartbreaking moments in Bears history.

Walter Payton's last game

The 1987 season was supposed to be a special one for the Bears, but the Washington Redskins had different ideas. In the NFC Divisional round, the Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead, and it looked like they were on their way to the NFC Championship game. Darrell Green took a kick back for a touchdown for the Redskins, which gave them a lead.

The Bears were driving, but Walter Payton fell one yard short on fourth down. The Bears never got the ball back, and Payton never played again in the NFL. To make matters worse, the Redskins won the Super Bowl that year.

Loss in Super Bowl XLI

Super Bowl XLI started off with a bang for the Bears as Devin Hester returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. After the first quarter, the Bears were still up 14-6, and the hope was strong that they would end the night by lifting the Lombardi Trophy.

The bad news for the Bears was after the first quarter, the offense went away. The Colts scored 10 points in the second quarter while not giving up anything to the Bears. The Bears did score another three points in the third quarter, but that's all they could get.

The Colts finished the game with a 29-17 victory.

Too many deaths too young

The Bears have had a few players in their history pass away too early. Brian Piccolo played four seasons with the Bears but passed away at the age of 27 after fighting a germ cell tumor.

Payton was one of the best players in team history, but he tragically lost his life at the age of 45 due to liver disease. Even though he died, some good came from it. The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation still helps people who are less fortunate to try to find stability in their life:

OUR MISSION is to take an active role in helping those less fortunate to find stability while providing positive opportunities needed to live their lives with dignity and pride.

Packers knock out the Bears

Losing in the NFC Championship game is tough, but losing it to your bitter rival makes it even worse. In the 2010 NFL Championship Game, the Bears offense struggled in the first three quarters, and it cost them. They scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to come away with a victory.

Jay Cutler was knocked out of the game with an injury, which meant Caleb Hanie had to fill in. It was a tough spot for Hanie, who really struggled against the Packers defense. Hanie threw two interceptions, which ultimately led the Bears to the loss.

Cody Parkey….Doink

Losing a playoff game on a missed kick is heartbreaking, especially when it's only from 43-yards out. The Bears were playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Game during the 2018 playoffs and were down by one with the offense having driven them into field goal range.

After the Eagles chose to ice Parkey right before his first field goal attempt, he lined up for another try. Parkey's second kick hit the left upright and crossbar before landing back in the end zone.

The Eagles advanced to the divisional round for a showdown against the New Orleans Saints, while the Bears watched the rest of the playoffs from their couch.
