Over the last few years, 2K Sports has dominated the basketball simulation scene with its critically acclaimed NBA 2K series. It has completely left EA Sports and its once beloved NBA Live series in the dust in terms of gameplay and sales.

But now, it seems that EA has finally beaten 2K… In the mobile gaming market. Released on the July 6th, NBA Live Mobile has shot to number one on the app market, beating out the mobile version of NBA 2K16.

EA's strategy to achieve this feat was simple; using the free-to-play business model. In the long haul, it allows them to make more money off of micro-transactions than they would have with an upfront cost. They learned this after not being able to gain a foothold in the mobile gaming market for many years with the old approach. They followed the example set by one of the more popular mobile games, Clash Of Clans, and its success.

With five games within the top-100 mobile games, it looks like EA is poised to take over the market, but 2K may follow in its footsteps. If that happens, will EA attempt to get exclusive rights to NBA mobile games to eliminate more competition from 2K?

Probably not, but I'm still bitter about the demise of the NFL 2K series and EA's exclusivity license with professional football.
