NBA commissioner Adam Silver has expressed the need for the league to revisit rules surrounding early free agency deals.

Per Ben Golliver, Silver said that the consensus around the league is that the rules regarding “leakage” and “slippage” during free agency must be revisited.

“We always knew there was some leakage and slippage around those deadlines. I think the consensus (at our league meetings) is that we need to revisit and reset those rules.”

In today's age of social media, news and rumors have mushroomed around who's signing with who or who's teaming up with who. Everyone — both fans and journalists — craves for the latest inside scoop. As such, the NBA has kept a close eye at the people involved. The NBA has set up rules with subsequent hefty fines for those who violate it. In recent memory, Silver has fined Magic Johnson — then president of basketball operations of the Los Angeles Lakers — for tampering. Recently, LA Clippers head coach Doc Rivers was fined, too. These are all measures created by the NBA so that all teams have an equal chance to snag the free agents in the market.

Though Silver didn't point out the specific deals that had leaks, he stated before that he would rather have the trade demands remain private. He was referring to the Anthony Davis situation last season. Though no one was caught tampering, the news of his trade request dominated the airwaves for quite some time, causing teams to strategize on how to land the star. Things would've been different if his trade request did not go out in public.
