For former NBA coach Paul Westphal, today's playstyles have become cookie-cutter as most teams run the same type of offensive set.

Westphal, who was part of the legendary Boston Celtics team of the 70s, chimed in on today's basketball style which, in his view, have become over-reliant on pick-and-rolls and 3-pointers. Per John Karalis of Mass Live:

“The styles are all the same now,” he told me. “You spread out, you run a pick and roll with the slowest defender, and put a couple of shooters in the corner. You don’t have individual teams with an offense that’s different than somebody else’s offense. It’s become too cookie cutter and too reliant on the 3.”

The Hall of Fame coach pointed out that in today's game, a team doesn't need a “diverse” offensive playset. Most teams today have a bunch of 3-pointers and someone who can set a good screen.

“You don’t need a diverse offense, all you need is a high screen and roll and shooters everywhere,” Westphal said “I’d like to see more subtlety and make it harder to get a shot.”

Do you agree with Westphal's observation? Have teams employed a cookie-cutter type of offense? If so, has this affected the game negatively? Or Westphal's views belong to the past?
