Former Los Angeles Lakers president for basketball operations Magic Johnson has not had the best past few months. Following his parting ways with L.A., rumors emerged pertaining to his poor performance as a team executive that ultimately had a significant effect on all the trouble the Lakers went through over the past couple of seasons.

However, former on-court rival and long-time buddy Larry Bird has come to the defense of the embattled Johnson, as the former explained why he thinks the media is currently portraying a wrongful image of Magic.

“That’s not him,” Bird said, via Brian Mahoney of AP News. “That don’t sound like Magic at all to me and I just hope everything works out for him because we have a good relationship.”

Despite being fierce rivals on the basketball court pretty much throughout their whole careers in the NBA, these two Hall of Famers have obviously developed quite a bond. Bird is being quite noble here, going out of his way to defend Johnson, who seems to have recently been singled out as the Lakers' scapegoat.

According to Johnson himself, however, despite his unceremonious departure from the team, he remains one hundred percent loyal to the Lakers and is actually still helping out the team in any way he can.

Johnson's tenure as a team executive for his beloved Lakers may have not been as successful as many would have hoped for, but surely, this takes nothing away from the legendary career he had for the Purple and Gold as a pro.
