The NBA is revamping its annual G League Elite Camp with the hope of getting more exposure for collegiate prospects preparing to enter the pros, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

The camp will be a three-day event from May 12 through May 14, finishing one day ahead of the NBA Scouting Combine, which begins on May 15. There will be 40 prospects chosen to participate, and they will all be players who were not selected among the 60 prospects chosen to participate in the combine.

The top performers from the Elite Camp will then be earn the right to join the scouting combine.

“We're thrilled to introduce the NBA G League Elite Camp as an essential addition to our comprehensive evaluation process of potential NBA and NBA G League talent,” NBA G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim said in a statement. “This event will provide more players with exposure as they enter the next phase of their careers.”

Last year, a record 236 players declared early entry for the draft, making things a bit complicated for NBA teams, as there was such a high volume of prospects to monitor. For comparison's sake, that number increased from 182 in 2017 and 162 in 2016.

By instituting this new version of the Elite Camp, NBA teams will be given more of a chance to evaluate a wider range of prospects and, in turn, will help underclassmen get a better idea of whether they should keep their names in the draft or withdraw and return to school.

In a day and age where four-year draftees are becoming less and less common, this is a terrific idea by the league.
