With the NBA on indefinite hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the league has announced that a players-only NBA 2K video game tournament will take place beginning on Friday, April 3, according to a Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Per Haynes, all 30 teams are expected to have representatives, including some big-name players. Although the league is still finalizing some of the details, this gaming tournament allows NBA fans to watch some competitive basketball without worrying about the spread of the deadly coronavirus, which continues to rampage the globe.

The NBA 2K series by Take Two Interactive has been going strong since its first iteration in 1999 with Allen Iverson on the cover. With overall sales of games in the entire series above 90 million worldwide, the franchise is one of the Top 20 sellers in video game history.

According to Video Game Sales Wiki, both NBA 2K18 and NBA 2K19 sold above 9 million copies – making them the best-selling games in the franchise thus far. Beyond that, a February statement from Take Two Interactive confirmed that its most recent entry in the series, NBA 2K20 (featuring Anthony Davis on the cover) had already sold 8 million copies in its first four months on sale.

Before Davis was the cover athlete, Giannis Antetokounmpo was on the cover of 2K19, a fitting figure for that season as he stormed his way to his first NBA MVP award.

The Greek Freak was looking strong as the MVP frontrunner this season before everything was put on hold to protect the players, fans and stadium employees. It will be nice to have some competitive NBA action back, even if it is in a digital format.
