The Dallas Mavericks has made it clear it intends to trade former first-round pick Dennis Smith Jr., as they plan to build their roster around rookie sensation Luka Doncic.

The Mavericks have reportedly been in talks with several teams about a potential trade for Smith Jr.. But now the Mavericks want to package him and one other player from their roster.

In an episode of the Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN's Brian Windhorst said that the Mavs are trying to package Smith Jr. with JJ Barea.

“[Dallas is] also trying to package — they're also trying to get somebody to take [J.J.] Barea. They've talked about that in some deals with Dennis Smith in the last week.”

This is a surprising move for the Mavs, who recently applied for a Disabled Player Exception for Barea after the veteran guard suffered a torn Achilles a few days ago.

Now it seems that things might have changed. Barea's contract is set to expire after this season. The situation of his deal would attract teams that are looking to free cap space in preparation for this summer's free agency.

If Dallas will somehow find a trade partner that will take a DSJ-Barea package, they will most likely want an additional second round pick in return.

Prior to his injury, Barea was an integral part of the Mavs' second unit, averaging 10.9 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 41% from the field. He was also part of the team that won the franchise's first ever title in 2011.

If traded, Barea is not expected to report to his new team.
