Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart continued to make improvements on his game last season as he set new career-highs with 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals in 30.4 minutes. And this offseason, Smart has been hard at work toward improving his body.

According to Celtics.com reporter Taylor C. Snow, Smart says he’s lost 20 pounds over the summer.

It definitely bodes well for the Celtics to have Smart at his best this year. After trading Avery Bradley this offseason, Smart will likely see more time at shooting guard for the Celtics this year.

While Smart has always been a very good defender, his offensive game has still left a lot to be desired. It remains to be seen whether all the work he’s put in will improve his subpar shooting. He’s only a career 29 percent 3-point shooter. But his leaner frame and potentially increased explosion should help him in terms of getting to the basket.

Marcus Smart is set to be a restricted free agent next summer. If his new and improved body can deliver a strong season, the chances of him landing a big contract should also be greatly improved.
