The Boston Celtics are in a period of transition and one of the main priorities of new general manager Brad Stevens is to maintain his healthy relationship with his star players Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
But obviously, getting a coach to guide the two All-Stars is imperative as well. Stevens, who's always had a reserved personality, said he won't be micromanaging whoever the next Celtics tactician would be. In fact, knowing very well how difficult it is to win in the NBA, Stevens said he's actually looking forward to losing (via NBC Sports Boston).
“I’ve told everybody I’ve talked to in a weird, kind of a messed-up way, I’m looking forward to the first time we lose and I can walk in there and put my arm around them and say, ‘I’ve lost a ton here. Let’s go get a coffee, let’s go grab a beer. It’s OK. It’s part of a long journey.’ I think I’m looking forward to that, just being supportive and staying out it from a coaching perspective.”
It would be stupid to think that Stevens literally wants to lose, but there's surely wisdom in what he said. As they say, people grow more in defeat. Tatum, Brown, and the rest of the Celtics have suffered successive setbacks, and Stevens was with them through it all.
“I’ve stayed in close contact. I talked to several of the guys right after (the Kemba Walker trade) and have been in very close contact throughout the past couple of weeks with both Jaylen and Jayson specifically, but that’s not unusual.”
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown truly blossomed under Brad Stevens. Now, their long journey continues.
