Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris turned heads recently by demanding justice for Breonna Taylor instead of answering reporters' questions during his media availability. On Tuesday, Boston Celtics veteran guard Marcus Smart followed in his footsteps.
Taylor is an emergency Medical Technician who was shot in her sleep last March by Louisville police officers executing a no-knock warrant.
“Before we start guys, my answer is going to be ‘Justice for Breonna Taylor,'” the Celtics guard said, via Chris Grenham of Forbes. “That's gonna be my answer to everything. So, I'm just letting you guys know now. Justice for Breonna Taylor.”

Following the social justice activism that started after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minnesota police officers, Taylor's supporters have also consistently needled Louisville and Kentucky public officials for the lack of accountability in law enforcement.
This past week also revealed that Louisville police failed to respond to Taylor's injuries, as the young woman was clinging to her life and officers on the scene did not swiftly act for emergency response.
The Celtics' longest-tenured player, Marcus Smart, is demanding justice for Taylor's killers, as only one of the three officers involved have been terminated from their position at the Louisville Metro Police Department and none of the three have been arrested or indicted.
Social justice issues will be at the forefront of the NBA's restart, which is slated to begin on July 30 with 22 teams invited to the Orlando “bubble.” The Celtics and the rest of the NBA are prepared to continue raising issues to the lack of accountability in law enforcement, with plans to wear slogans for activism such as “Freedom” or “Black Lives Matter” on the back of their jerseys where their names would be.
