The rumor mill continues to spin after the Phoenix Suns reportedly reached a buyout with center Greg Monroe. As a result, there are a number of teams waiting to sign the 27-year-old once he clears waivers — among those are the Boston Celtics.

According to David Aldridge of NBA.com, the Celtics have already established themselves as the early frontrunners for Monroe's services.

It has been a tumultuous 2017-18 NBA season for Monroe, to say the least. He was in the third and final year of his $51.4 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks before being traded to the Suns in November. Needless to say, things did not change in Phoenix and he is now set to hit the market once again.

Monroe is averaging 10.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 25 games this season. Despite his modest numbers, the veteran big man could certainly bring some much-needed depth to the thinning frontcourts throughout the league.

Although the Celtics have a solid big man in All-Star power forward Al Horford, it seems they could be looking to add another scoring punch off the bench. Boston has given plenty of indication that they plan to do so after choosing not to offer shooting guard Jarell Eddie a second contract — meaning they may be leaving a potential roster spot open for Monroe.

However, they will face some stiff competition from a number of other teams looking for an experienced big man. Another name that has emerged as favorites are the New Orleans Pelicans who could now offer a much larger role due to the season-ending Achilles injury to star center Demarcus Cousins.
