Since the conclusion of the 2018 NBA Finals, there has been constant chatter surrounding All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving's long-term future with the Boston Celtics. All of this noise has surrounded his largely non-committal stance about working out a new extension with the franchise.
This has created a sense of uncertainty from the Celtics about the situation as Irving enters the fourth year of his five-year, $94.3 million deal that has a player option for the 2019-2 season. However, the 26-year-old has voiced recently his excitement for what lies ahead of Boston over the next several years.
There is plenty of speculation swirling about Kyrie Irving's future but the point guard told @bostonsportsbsj that he's excited to be a part of a championship-caliber team in Boston for 'years to come.' https://t.co/dC60Z6wrdU

It is still quite early in the process, but it is hard to read into the mind frame that Irving has with his contract situation. He only has to play the 2018-19 season for the Celtics before having the opportunity to hit the free agent market next summer if so chooses to do so. this has put Boston in a precarious position of trying to work out a new long-term deal before Irving becomes an unrestricted free agent.
What has made this entire situation more complicated is that Irving has stated in the past his desire to play for the New York Knicks. He has publicly voiced his admiration for All-Star forward Kristaps Porzingis that has only brought fuel to that possibility if he were to hit free agency next offseason. What makes matters more interesting is that he isn't leaning toward working out a new extension this summer.
There is clearly a lot for the Celtics to weigh with their star point guard, but it doesn't seem to be something that will receive any clarity any time soon. The only thing the front office can do is hope that this can be worked out with Irving being a long-term piece of the puzzle of a potential championship contender.
