Despite being one of the teams that quickly emerged as a possible next destination for disgruntled Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, the Miami Heat are not keeping their hopes of landing him through a trade this summer very high.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, he believes the Heat are not going to strongly pursue the All-Star point guard, especially with the lack of assets they can offer the Cavs. Jackson adds that the Heat consider themselves a long-shot to acquire him.

“And while the possibility certainly cannot be ruled out, the Heat does not have considerable optimism about being able to strike a deal, multiple league sources said.”

“One Eastern Conference official who spoke to the Heat said Miami considers itself something of a long shot.”

“Regardless of the Heat’s level of interest – and Miami always inquires when a star player is available – the Heat at this point does not view a deal as very likely. Miami’s best chance would be if suitors with more appealing assets can’t strike a deal and the Cavaliers circle back to Miami.”

That said, it’s highly unlikely to happen. Both teams also play in the same conference, and the Cavaliers know the rich winning culture the South Beach-based team has, and adding Irving to their fold could potentially hurt them in the future if they will become a contender for the title again.

However, stranger things have happened in the NBA, and with Pat Riley calling the shots, it won’t come as a surprise if the Heat can find some sort of creative way to snag Irving from the Cavs. The team has some good young players that the Cavs could consider, and with The Godfather’s convincing skills, there may be some hope on Heat Island that the heat can get Irving.
