After remaining a free agent since being waived by the New York Knicks on Sunday, Mindaugas Kuzminskas is now looking ahead to where he can continue playing professional basketball. If he doesn't receive any offers from teams around the NBA, Kuzminskas is apparently considering a return to Europe, according to Lithuanian reporter Domantas Urbona, via Sportando.
“My priority is NBA,” Kuzminskas said. “But who knows, maybe nobody needs me. Then I would consider return to Europe.”
The 6-foot-9 forward then made it known that the money is not his main priority, as he wants to be able to showcase his talents on the court, by having consistent playing time more than anything else at this stage of his career.
“If I needed money, I would have stayed in New York. I want to play, not to sit on the bench.”
Kuzminskas appeared in 68 games last season with the Knicks, where he earned his playing time and became a regular fixture in head coach Jeff Hornacek’s rotation. He was able to show glimpses of his true potential, and also averaged decent numbers of 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 14.9 minutes per game.
However, the team had some key additions over the summer like Doug McDermott and Michael Beasley and left the 28-year-old competing for his minutes at the small forward spot once again, before ultimately falling off the rotation.
It remains to be seen where he’ll end up next, but based on Kuzminskas’ statement, one thing that’s certain is he’ll choose the team that will give him a lot of playing time, and a chance to prove that he really deserves to play at the highest level.
