The Los Angeles Lakers are already working towards a deal with Tyronn Lue to officially make him the next head coach of the team, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

Lue will take the place of erstwhile Lakers coach Luke Walton, who has already been hired to take over the Sacramento Kings.

The Lakers were previously focusing its search on Monty Williams, but Williams instead opted to join the Phoenix Suns as head coach.

Lue was a logical choice to succeed Walton, as he has previously coached the Lakers’ biggest star, LeBron James, when the two were with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lue seemed to be James’s handpicked choice to take the place of the outgoing David Blatt, and Lue delivered on James’s faith — by masterminding their comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.

During his time with James and the Cavs across two-and-a-half seasons, Lue compiled a sterling record of 128-77 in the regular season.

A journeyman as a player, Lue spent 11 seasons in the league and played for the Lakers, winning a championship in 2001.

Can Lue deliver James the “hands-off” approach that he seems to prefer in his later years? It certainly worked out well in Cleveland, but only time will tell if the same approach will pay dividends with the Lue back with the purple and gold in James’s first stint there.
