It was announced on Tuesday that Miami Heat stud Tyler Herro has been officially named as the 2021-22 Sixth Man of the Year. This did not come as a major surprise considering how the 22-year-old was the clear frontrunner for the title. However, this fact did not make the actual moment any less memorable.
Heat talisman Udonis Haslem surprised Herro during Tuesday's practice by giving him his Sixth Man of the Year award in front of all his teammates. Before actually handing over the hardware, Haslem decided to deliver a moving speech praising Herro for all of his achievements this season (h/t Miami Heat on Twitter):
āIn today's NBA, honestly, you can be a star off the bench, you can be a star on whatever role, if you see the big picture, if the team win,ā Haslem said. āTo have a young player trust in what I say and trust in what we say, that's big because they all have their own vision. Also, being a father, managing being a father, being an NBA player, Sixth Man of the Year, and giving us what we ask from you, that's a lot, that's big. Took a lot of steps this year, man, it's bigger than Sixth Man of the Year for you, bro. Took a lot of steps just being a man, being a professional, so I'm proud of you.ā

A lot of major steps taken professionally and personally ā this season has been bigger than the award for @raf_tyler [SOUND UP] #6MOTYLER pic.twitter.com/A02dgTZCAK

Apart from playing in the best season of his young career, Herro also became a father late last year. As Haslem said, it's no easy task balancing being a first-time dad and one of the best players in the league. Herro has been nothing short of outstanding this season and there's no denying that the Heat would not be where they are right now without him.
