Despite often matching up against one another during their playing days, the late NBA icon Kobe Bryant and retired superstar Dwyane Wade shared a wonderful friendship off the court.

The two legendary shooting guards were pure business whenever their respective NBA teams took on each other. But once the horn sounded, Bryant and Wade shared a mutual admiration for one another.

Wade, who now works as an analyst for TNT after retiring last year, recently opened up about his relationship with Bryant. The five-time NBA champion tragically passed last January after figuring in a horrific helicopter crash.

In Bleacher Report's Live AMA session, the Miami Heat all-time great entertained some questions from NBA fans and shared how he earned Bryant's trust and friendship.

“I built one,” Dwyane Wade answered when asked what his relationship with Kobe Bryant was like.

“Early on Kobe didn’t have a lot of relationships. I got a chance to build one with the respect of Kobe. I could call him anytime and vice versa. That’s one of the relationships that I’m proud of. To be able to have one with one of my fave players of all time was special,” Wade explained.”

Apart from his unbelievable achievements on the hardwood, Kobe is perhaps best remembered for his competitive nature. The once cold and distant superstar eventually embraced being a mentor to the young generation of stars, particularly towards the end of his NBa career.

Wade, meanwhile, also had the pleasure of being Kobe's teammate with Team USA in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The pair were once considered as the two best shooting guards in the NBA at the height of their powers.
