Through 10 games so far this season, Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray has shown a lot of improvement in his game, and has been producing better numbers than from his rookie year. That said, it’s not surprising that Mike Malone is very impressed with what he’s seen from him, and wants him to play a bigger role for the team.

Although he recently admitted that he will continue to go with players who have played well during games as part of his closing five on the floor, he also added that he is hopeful that the 20-year-old Kentucky product could emerge as someone who can play that role for them consistently.

“I’m hoping that Jamal could be that guy,” Malone said.

Murray has definitely taken his game to the next level so far this season, as he has been averaging 12.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 24.6 minutes per game. Despite sharing the minutes at shooting guard with Will Barton, the Canadian international has earned the trust of his coach to be given him more playing time.

If he can sustain his strong performances as the season progresses, it will be a huge boost to the Nuggets’ chances of competing for a playoff spot in the West. It will also add to his confidence and experience, as closing out games will give him the opportunity to play when the game is hanging on the balance, and even take shots that could win it for his team.
