Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum is donating $170,000 to communities in Portland, Oregon, and Canton, Ohio for relief of the novel coronavirus, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro Area will receive a $70,000 donation and the Akron-Canton Food Bank will receive $100,000.
McCollum, a Canton native, is hoping his donation can help with staff retention, virtual counseling and several other programs for children and families, as well as distributing meals.
Food Bank donations will provide 400,000 meals to families in Canton and surrounding towns in Stark and Tuscarawas counties.
Article Continues BelowThe Blazers talent is known for his philanthropy efforts in the past. He opened several “Dream Centers” for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area equipped with modern technology, reading spaces and literacy materials.
The Blazers guard has dabbled in sideline reporting, analysis, and even hosts his own podcast. His penchant for journalist urged him to create “CJ’s Press Pass,” a journalism mentorship program that brings in local high school students to Blazers games for an authentic game-coverage experience.
Students are asked to write recaps and film portions of the game for a realistic take on what the job entails.
McCollum is averaging 22.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 45.3% from the floor and 38% from beyond the arc through 62 games in the 2019-20 season.
