Despite all the awareness being raised by NBA players, as well as different athletes and celebrities about equality and their movement against acts of racial discrimination, it is still rampant in society. League games are not spared from it as well, with players at times being subjected to these lowly gestures by some unruly fans.
Such was the case during the game between the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday as Patty Mills was the victim of some racial taunts by someone watching from the stands. It can be clearly heard on the video uploaded on Twitter, who tagged Mills on it.
The Australian international replied to it in a very classy manner, letting everyone know how proud he is of his roots. He also hoped that the fan will be enlightened enough to not give out racist remarks anymore.
@KingJames am I the only one who heard this guy in the crowd yell “hey Jamaican dog they want their bobsledder back! Hey @Patty_Mills Jamaica just called, they want their bobsledder back!” 😳😠🙅🏾♀️ #SundayFunday ??? @NBA pic.twitter.com/RvHdu88Gzd

Thanks @thats_Z_Truth. I am a proud Islander. Like my Jamaican Brothers, me & my family in the islands of the Torres Strait have experienced racial slurs for decades. Hope your efforts will enlighten this confused, hateful fan. #BlackHistoryMonth https://t.co/yH3nKlGv4A

Mills' mother is aboriginal, while his father is an islander. He has always held his heritage with much pride and it's even indicated in his Twitter bio. It only goes to show that Mills feels honored to represent those who have the same roots as him, proving that anyone can be successful in different fields as long as they work hard for it.
There is truly no place for racism anywhere in the world. What happened on Sunday only proves that anybody can be a victim of it regardless of their stature. It is a sad reality of our society, but Mills deserves a lot of credit for how he responded, showing he is a class act.
