With the 2017-18 NBA season coming to a close, the Oklahoma City Thunder are nearly on the cusp of missing out of the playoffs. However, forward Paul George does not seemed to be too concerned about the team's looming future.
There has been plenty of speculation regarding his plans for free agency this summer. Although this season has not gone the way fans had hoped, George says that he is going to take a look at which players Oklahoma City could potentially add to their talented core of players, per ESPN's Royce Young:
“Absolutely. That definitely changes a lot,” he said. “Andre is a big piece, and him going down, it definitely was a big blow to us. But you've got to look at everything. You've got to look at what we can be, imagine what we would be if Andre was here playing with [us] now. Absolutely, you've got to look at everything. You've got to look at the team coming back, with free agency coming up with other guys who we could possibly go grab and who could we, myself, [Carmelo Anthony], [Russell Westbrook], who can we recruit with us here. You've got to look at everything.”
It has been a roller-coaster season for the Thunder, to say the least. At times, it looked as if the superstar trio was finally starting to synergize into a potential championship contender. However, their recent play suggests they still have a long way to go before that plan comes to fruition.
Unfortunately, time is one thing they do not have on their side. Oklahoma City now finds themselves in a position where they essentially must win out in order to claim a spot in this year's playoffs. Even then, the possibility of being quickly eliminated will give the Thunder even less time to work on their offseason pitch.
While it is encouraging for fans to hear George further express his open-mindedness to stay, there is not much indication that they will be able to add another piece to help take the team to the next level. Acquiring another star talent would undoubtedly add to their already massive payroll, which may not be in the books at this time.
