Kevin Durant took a substantial paycut this offseason to stay on with the Golden State Warriors. He signed a two-year, $53 million contract, with his $25 million salary this season around $10 million less than what he could’ve made.

The Finals MVP told The Mercury News’ Mark Medina that he feels “blessed” to be earning what he’s earning, although didn’t go so far as to say he’s willing to take another discounted salary in the future.

Durant’s move to take a decreased salary was crucial in keeping the Warriors’ championship core intact this season. His sacrifice allowed the team to pay other key contributors like Shaun Livingston and Andre Iguodala in free agency.

Durant’s decision clearly had an eye towards the future. He's already made a lot of money in the league, and taking less puts him in better position to win more championships with the Warriors in the very near future. It was a move Tim Duncan also made, which certainly helped him and the Spurs win a handful of championships together.

The Warriors have already won one with this core. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, they are in a great position to win multiple more titles with Durant, who is arguably the biggest bargain in the NBA at the moment.
