Old habits die hard for old and young — and being in the same line of work won't deter that at all.
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr took up his usual dinner with his former coach and now colleague Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs, and now even after many years have passed — the long-tenured coach still holds the same rule of insisting to pay for any meals with any of his former players.
“Oh, he did,” said Kerr when asked who picked up the tab after dinner was over. “That's kind of the rule. He made the rule while we were playing.”
“He has a rule with his team — if you end up in the same restaurant as Pop, then he automatically picks up the tab. So Danny Ferry and I used to go to the concierge to find out where Pop was eating (laughs)… so you'd just sneak in, ‘oh hey-oh Pop-how you doing? — hey waiter here's the bill'. So the rule still applies for former players too, so I'm not even allowed, not even if I wanted to — I wouldn't be allowed to pick it up.”

Kerr earned two championship rings under Popovich during two different stints with the team — one in 1999 and the other in 2003 — his last of his 15 NBA seasons.
Kerr's son, Nick, joined the Spurs over the summer as a video coordinator, hoping to follow his dad's footsteps in the coaching profession someday.
