On Wednesday, it was announced that the Xavier Musketeers and head basketball coach Travis Steele have decided to part ways following another disappointing season. Steele has been part of the Xavier program for 13 years. He began in 2009 as an assistant for Sean Miller for one season. Chris Mack then took over as head coach, where Steele also acted as an assistant for.

Four years ago, Mack took the head coaching job at Louisville, opening the door for Steele to finally be the head man in charge. The experiment with Steele and Xavier did not go well. Prior to his arrival, the Musketeers had reached the NCAA Tournament in 16 of the previous 18 seasons. In the four years under Steele, Xavier did not make the tournament once.

Steele actually coached the Musketeers on Tuesday night in the NIT. Xavier defeated Cleveland State in the opening round. However, he met with Xavier administration officials and it was decided on Wednesday he will no longer coach the team.

The school is likely heading into an aggressive pursuit of a new head coach across the nation. The school had built a solid, consistent program and likely don't want to fall too far off the radar. They finished the 2021-2022 season 8-11 in the Big East and 19-13 overall.
