With Jerry Stackhouse returning to college basketball to coach the Vanderbilt Commodores, expectations are all over the place. That said, at least those from a national perspective do not expect the program to rise from the ashes like a phoenix in great haste.
Stackhouse understands that; though that's not the message he's attempting to send his team.
“When they buy into what we’re trying to do and able to have some success, I’m pretty sure the followers will come …,” Jerry Stackhouse said via the AP. “It’s great we don’t have a lot of expectations from the outside, but we have a lot of expectations for ourselves because of how we work and how we approach things and how we teach, and hopefully the teaching and the learning and the accountability that we put on top of that can bear some good fruit.”
The Vanderbilt Commodores likely have a bit of a journey before the program is competitive in a forever brutal SEC.
Even with that being the case, Stackhouse has already done a tremendous job on the recruiting trail and he's known — mostly from his time in the G League — as a dude who can maximize talent.
The 2019-20 college basketball campaign, regardless of expectations, should be a fun one for fans.
