Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Richard Pitino was yet another person asked about the name, image and likeness conversation sweeping the nation after California fully passed SB 206, allowing student-athletes to profit off their NIL starting in 2023.

Unlike most of his colleagues, however, the son of the legendary Rick Pitino appears more than willing to let players receive their share of the cut — at least relative to name, image and likeness things.

“I do think (players) should be able to profit off their individual brand,” Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Richard Pitino said, via the AP. “If they’re profiting off their individual brand, that means we’re winning. That means they’re getting better. I think everybody wins in it.”

It makes sense and is clearly less doomsday driven than many of his colleagues' talking points have been.

Following California's governor signing SB 206, several other states began to draft similar legislation. Simply because a few politicians have done that, though, it doesn't mean those states will inherently put those bills into effect at some point down the road.

Nevertheless, this is an insanely fluid story. For Minnesota Golden Gophers coach Rick Pitino, though, he appears to be one of the few people in a position of authority willing to give up some of his power.
