Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett believes Steve Nash will do an excellent job as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Garnett, who had countless battles with Nash back in the day, says the two-time MVP is a “killer” underneath his seemingly cheerful demeanor:

“Underneath the Hollywood smile, the hair and the dope conversation is a killer,” Garnett told Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News.

“He’s a competitor, bruh. I can remember him never quitting. I can remember him always coming back. I can remember him getting his nose broke and still going. Steve’s a f–king fighter, man. He’s one of them guys you want in the trenches with you.

“There’s only but so many people that you want in the trenches with you,” Garnett continued, “that’s gonna fight back and be right there with you and Steve’s one of them people. I always remember him being a fierce competitor under all that brashness and all that polish.”

Steve Nash has a close relationship with Nets superstar small forward Kevin Durant, as the two trained together on the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2019. Since Nash is one of the greatest point guards in NBA history, it kind of makes sense the Nets hired him since they have one of the elite guards in the game in Kyrie Irving.

The Nash hiring, though, was met with some criticism, most notably from ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, who said Nash got the Nets job due to “white privilege.”

While Kevin Garnett is rooting for Nash to succeed with the Nets, he did admit to Winfield he'd like to see more Black coaches in the NBA:

“But if I was to be candid, you’ve got Mark Jackson out there. You’ve got Sam Cassell out there. You’ve got Tyronn Lue out there. You know what I’m saying? Proven guys, but Steve’s my guy. I’ll support him in anything he does, but it was also some — in my estimation — some deeper candidates out there that Brooklyn could have went with.”

It's going to be interesting to see how Nash does with the Nets in 2020-21. With Durant and Irving leading the way, Brooklyn will be title contenders.
