Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving stands to pay a steep price should he be penalized for violating the NBA's Health and Safety Protocols.

Irving, who was allegedly without a mask at a family birthday party, could be fined upwards of $460,000 per game, per Marc Stein of the New York Times.

The All-Star point guard had already missed the Nets' last three games for “personal reasons,” though there was even some internal confusion as to what those reasons entailed.

A video of Irving at his sister's birthday party subsequently surfaced on the web, and the NBA is now determining whether there was a broach of protocol. Malika Andrews and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported the Nets are not expecting Irving to rejoin the team this week:

Irving was already ruled out of his fourth straight game Tuesday night against Denver, and sources say that, at a minimum, he is expected to miss Wednesday's game against New York and Saturday's against Orlando. His absence has been attributed to personal reasons.

The league underwent a similar investigation after Houston Rockets guard James Harden allegedly attended a family party without a mask. Harden was fined $50,000 and forced to quarantine, but did not miss a single game.

Irving's situation is a bit different. His absences have been confusing even to head coach Steve Nash, and this latest incident does not exactly reflect well on Kyrie with the NBA desperately trying to get a grasp on the spread of COVID-19.

It remains to be seen when the league will complete its investigation, but Irving could lose a small fortune depending on how many more games he misses for the Nets.
