At the moment, the general consensus is that the Brooklyn Nets somehow pulled off one of the greatest coups in NBA history by snagging Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant from right under the noses of their cross-town rivals, the New York Knicks.

Many believe that for some unknown reason, both Irving and Durant had a last-minute change of heart which led them towards the wide open arms of the Nets. However, according to Ian Begley of SNY, this simply wasn't the case. As a matter of fact, Irving had already told a random Knicks fan earlier on that his intention was to sign with Brooklyn.

Sometime after the Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs, Irving told at least one Knicks fan who asked him about playing at the Garden that he was planning to sign with Brooklyn, citing his Nets fandom, per SNY sources.

This new bit of information definitely goes against the narrative of both Irving and Durant coming extremely close to becoming the new face of the Knicks franchise. If we are to believe this story above, then it seems that Irving never really gave New York the time of day.

This does come as a bit of surprise considering how the Knicks and their ever-loyal fanbase appeared to be so heavily invested in an Irving-Durant pairing in New York. Even analysts believed that at some point, both superstars were already on their way to the Knicks.

At the end of the day, though, this is all water under the bridge now. We're not even sure if this gives Knicks fans any consolation. Given how horrendous the past few days have been for them, we're willing to bet that this does nothing to appease their raging souls.
