The term athletic freak of nature always ends up being tossed around this time of year as the NFL gathers in Indianapolis for the NFL Draft Combine. As the years have gone by, it's been harder to get the public's attention because the players have consistently gotten bigger, faster, and stronger. That's what makes the attention D.K. Metcalf has drawn even more impressive.

Metcalf played wide receiver at Ole Miss and he stole the show at this year's combine. Metcalf came in at 6-foot-3 and 228 pounds with just 1.9 percent body fat, a 40.5-inch vertical, and a 4.33 second 40-yard dash. Metcalf's 40 time is just .11 seconds slower than the combine record, 4.22 seconds, set by Cincinnati Bengals' wide out John Ross in 2017. He also set the combine record of receiver wingspan with a length of 82-7/8″.

His physique has caught the internet's attention before. Last month, a photo of him standing next to his teammate A.J. Brown, went viral as Metcalf dwarfed his teammate.

“Freak show,” said Ole Miss director of athletic development Paul Jackson of Metcalf. “When you come to practice and put your eyes on him, everybody's like, ‘We don't have anyone on our team in the NFL that looks like that, that can run like that.'”

A third-year sophomore, Metcalf declared for the NFL Draft at the conclusion of last season. His sophomore year was cut short due to a neck injury suffered against Arkansas, but he has completely recovered. In seven games, Metcalf caught 26 passes for 569 yards.

While the statical numbers aren't there, many NFL Draft analyst believe he will still be the first wide receiver chosen and will be a top 10, first-round pick. Metcalf could possibly fall though, should teams fall in love with and trade up for quarterback prospects, leading some of the talented defenders in this year's draft to tumble down the board in front of Ole Miss' receiver.
