Even though Colin Kaepernick settled his collusion case with the NFL, the rumors that suggest he received a large settlement may be greatly exaggerated.

As we've previously reported, Kaepernick was reportedly at the receiving end of somewhere between $60 to $80 million when his collusion case against the NFL was settled. Through his attorney, Mark Geragos, the former 49ers quarterback declined to release a specific statement about the nature of his settlement, as the settlement included a confidentiality agreement signed by both parties.

But now, according to NBC Sports, the actual settlement received by Kaepernick is much, much less than previously thought.

“The fact that Kaepernick may continue to seek employment with the NFL — and that he could, if denied employment, file a fresh claim for retaliation arising from his settled collusion grievance — suggests that the payment wasn’t a massive one. Buying out Kaepernick’s employment rights for the balance of his career would have been very expensive; the fact that the NFL didn’t buy out those employment rights, coupled with the potential exposure the NFL will have to a retaliation grievance if he remains unemployed, suggests that an enormous amount of money did not change hands.”

Additionally, Kaepernick's deal with the NFL didn't require approval from the league or other team players. The actual number, then, seems to suggest that it's under $49.5 million.

That's still a handsome payday, but a far cry from what he was originally hoping to get from the collusion settlement. Still, it looks like Kaep may be back on the field sooner rather than later.
