Buffalo Bills quarterback Nathan Peterman saw his dream of making his first career NFL start realized last Sunday when the Bills took on the Los Angeles Chargers on the road. It didn’t go as planned.
In fact, it turned out to be a nightmare for Nathan Peterman, who ended the game throwing five interceptions and completing just six of 14 passes for 66 yards before the Bills had enough of him and yanked the rookie out of the contest.
The Bills ended up with an embarrassing 54-24 loss, but that humiliation was probably less than what Peterman endured for the mess he wreaked on the field. The Bills could’ve pulled someone from the stands and get him to play quarterback and that dude might have stood a chance of outplaying Peterman.
So bad was Peterman’s performance that his 17.9 passer rating for that game was lower than if we hypothetically treat that contest as though he was the Chargers’ quarterback.
Allow Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk to do the rest of the math for us.
If Chargers players had been the intended target of his throws, and if treating his one pick-six as a touchdown pass and interception return yardage as passing yardage, Peterman’s stat line would have been five for 14, 84 yards, one touchdown, and six interceptions. And that creates a passer rating of 41.1.
If anything, Peterman’s colossal whack job just made it easier for Bills head coach Sean McDermott to decide which quarterback to start going forward, and that’s the original starter, Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor will be under center this coming Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and hopefully for Bills fans, Taylor would play well enough to avoid McDermott getting tempted of using Peterman again.
