A whopping 236 players were selected before Terry Godwin heard his name called in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Don't tell Ron Rivera that his team's new rookie wide receiver is unlikely to make an impact in 2019, though.

After the draft, the Carolina Panthers coach gushed about Godwin's ability as both a receiver and returner, making it seem as though the team expects more from him than most do from rookie seventh-rounders.

“I saw a stat of him that shows he’s like 13th all-time in receiving yards or receptions or something like that for Georgia,” Rivera said, per 247 Sports' Steven Taranto. “So you know he’s a guy that makes plays and makes things happen. He does have some return skills as well that we’re going to take a look at. He’s a dynamic guy with the ball in his hands and can make people miss and he’s got some speed.”

Godwin was a contributor for the Bulldogs during each of his four seasons on campus, but was especially effective before his senior year. In 2018, he caught 23 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns, the former of which was a career-low. Godwin's best season came as a junior, when he had 38 catches for 639 yards and six scores. He finished with 38 and 35 catches as a sophomore and freshman, respectively.

At just 5-foot-11, 184 pounds with 4.55 speed in the 40-yard dash, Godwin has the makings of a solid rotational slot receiver at the next level should he reach his potential. If Rivera's comments are any indication, though, the Panthers have higher hopes for him than that.
