Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has had his ups and downs since taking over the starting quarterback job early into his rookie season in 2018, but the team's general manager sounds as encouraged as ever by the former number one overall pick's ability to steer the franchise towards winning.
Speaking to the media at Browns training camp, GM Andrew Berry showered his young quarterback with praise. “Baker has really been outstanding this entire spring and summer,” he said, noting his “level of engagement with the coaching staff, getting up to speed mentally with the system and his interaction with his teammates.”
Berry also revealed that Mayfield “added four pounds of lean mass”, cut body fat and showed up to camp in “terrific shape.”
The Browns are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 6-10 campaign in 2019 after a flashy offseason placed Super Bowl-level expectations onto the franchise. Cleveland hired former Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach (replacing Freddie Kitchens), whom they hope will to spearhead Mayfield's development.
Berry clearly thinks Mayfield is amped and ready for the opportunity, and paid compliments to Mayfield for his displays of leadership despite a largely virtual offseason.
“I know he is really excited about the upcoming season, and he has done a really nice job of what I would call almost creating community and really bringing guys together, as difficult as that can be as everybody has really been trying to function virtually.”
After throwing for 27 touchdowns on a 93.7 passer rating in 14 games in his rookie season, Mayfield had just 22 touchdowns to 21 interceptions in 2019, starting all 16 games.
“We are all really excited about him entering the year,” Berry said.
