The Cleveland Browns have requested permission to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Browns fired Freddie Kitchens on Sunday after only one year on the job, and now hope they can hit on a long term coach this offseason.
McDaniels has been a hot coaching candidate each of the last few years and even agreed to be the Indianapolis Colts head coach back in 2018 before changing his mind and returning to the Patriots a few days later.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said on an appearance of NBC Sports Boston’s “Arbella Early Edition” before Week 17 that he thought McDaniels would have left the Patriots to join the Browns last offseason if he would have been offered the job.
“I think there are two jobs that Josh would have left for last year: the Cleveland Browns, the Green Bay Packers. One interviewed him and didn’t give him an offer, the other one didn’t interview him at all.”
Breer added he thinks that McDaniels would leave the Patriots this offseason for the Browns or Carolina Panthers.
“I think there are two jobs he would leave for this offseason: the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers.”
“I think in both spots the owners are interested in Josh McDaniels. In Cleveland, he’d get to go home and he’d get to work with a quarterback in Baker Mayfield that he really likes. In Carolina, the coach is going to have a lot of power.”
Maybe McDaniels will be the guy to finally lead the Browns back into the playoffs.
