The Cleveland Browns thumped the New York Jets by a score of 23-3 on Monday night in an outcome that was never really in question.
That's why Freddie Kitchens' decision to leave Baker Mayfield in late in the fourth quarter has drummed up some criticism, as Mayfield was sacked on a third-down play.
On Wednesday, Kitchens defended his choice to keep Mayfield on the field, saying he never even considered taking Mayfield out:
“No. He’s our quarterback,’’ said Kitchens, according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I wanted to make that last third down. Not to say that Garrett (Gilbert) couldn’t, but I wanted Baker to do it.’’
The fact that running back Nick Chubb had the wind knocked out of him earlier on that drive did not exactly help Kitchens' case, but Kitchens is maintaining that he stuck by his philosophy:
“We’re going to finish the game,’’ said the head coach. “That’s what we preach is finish the game, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We were trying to get a first down.”
Of course, Mayfield didn't suffer any injuries, but that won't stop people from criticizing Kitchens' decision to put him in harm's way, especially against a Jets defense led by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who is known for preaching hard hits to his players.
Mayfield completed 19 of his 35 passes for 325 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the win.
Cleveland will now head back home to play host to the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday.
