Most of the attention surrounding the Cleveland Browns going into the 2019 NFL season has been fixated on their offense, however, linebacker Joe Schobert has high expectations for the defense as well.
The Browns have added some notable pieces on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. According to Grant Gordon of NFL.com, Schobert has high hopes for this group.
“If everybody stays healthy and can play all 16 games this year until the playoffs,” Schobert said, “we're going to be a darn good team with a darn good defense that a lot of teams are going to have to take notice of and prepare for.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Schobert's comments. The Browns have managed to shore up some promising pieces to their defense in recent years. The 2019 campaign could be the year they put it all together.
Article Continues BelowCleveland put an emphasis on beefing up their defensive line around Myles Garrett with the addition of pass rusher Olivier Vernon and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson this offseason. They also managed to pair cornerback Denzel Ward with another promising, young talent in cornerback Greedy Williams.
Of course, Schobert will be expected to resume his integral role on this defense as the team's leading tackler. He is coming off back-to-back 100-tackle campaigns and even earned Pro Bowl honors in 2017. He is excited to continue thriving in obscurity while the Browns continue to generate headlines.
Although all eyes will be on the Browns' offense this year, it is the defense that will help them to meet their high expectations.
