The Cleveland Browns signaled the end of the Baker Mayfield era when they traded for Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson back in March. While it was likely disappointing for Mayfield to know that his time as the franchise quarterback was over, it was even more disappointing how the team handled the situation. General manager Andrew Berry had informed Mayfield earlier in the offseason that the team would be looking into some of the top quarterbacks if they became available, though the franchise didn't inform the Browns signal-caller before their meeting with Watson, something that really irked Mayfield. However, that wasn't even the ‘final straw' for him. Here's what really made Mayfield mad, as reported by ESPN.
But the final straw for Mayfield, according to multiple sources, came on March 16, when ESPN NFL insider Chris Mortensen said he believed Mayfield's time in Cleveland was over and that he was told the Browns wanted “an adult” at quarterback.
Mayfield was truly incensed to hear the news- not from the organization- that “his time was over in Cleveland” and that the Browns wanted “an adult” at quarterback.
Not only was Mayfield enraged at the fact that he was hearing these things from a person outside the organization- ESPN's Chris Mortensen- but he was also likely angry at the fact that the ‘adult' the Browns chose to replace him with, Watson, has been involved in a massive legal mess resulting from allegations of sexual assault.
No wonder Mayfield wants nothing to do with the Browns. It seems a trade is the only way to resolve this situation.
