It’s kind of appropriate that new Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich has a Manning involved with the offense next season. It isn’t that Manning, though—or anyone related to Indianapolis’ favorite Manning.

It’s Tom Manning, the former Iowa State offensive coordinator, and now the Colts new tight end coach.

“A really good situation for him and I’m really, really happy and proud of him, to be honest with you. I think it’s a really good opportunity for him. All of us have different goals and aspirations, and one of the neat things, for him, is that this was one of his goals and aspirations. And the fact that he was able to do it through the success we’ve been able to have here… That’s awesome — and awesome to our program.”

Manning served as Iowa State's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the past three seasons. He called the plays for the last two. While calling the plays, the Cyclones enjoyed the two most productive passing seasons in school history.

It almost seems like Manning is taking a step down going from being a coordinator to a position coach. But with his experience calling plays, he's probably looking at the job as a way to get his foot in the NFL door. Once an opportunity arises to move up, he will.
