The Dallas Cowboys are not exactly having a season that lives up to its owner's standards. And yet, Jerry Jones is out here publicly defending head coach Jason Garrett.
It is the year 2017, and we must live in the upside-down.
“Jason Garrett was named Coach of the Year of the whole NFL last year,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, via Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That was yesterday. This is today. The point is, I like this coaching staff.”
That seems somewhat passive-aggressive, but Jerry Jones did mostly have Jason Garrett's back.
When asked about his job security, Garrett deflected, claiming he is just trying to fix the Cowboys the best he can.
“The biggest thing we’re focusing on is cleaning up this game and trying to get better as a football team,” Garrett said. “That’s really where all of our attention is.”
“We haven’t played as well as we need to in the second half of these ballgames,” Garrett said Friday. “We’re looking at that as a coaching staff, how we can do that better and how we can sustain consistent execution for an entire ballgame.”
Nevertheless, however you want to spin it, this season wasn't a disaster if some context is allowed into the picture. Dallas has had to face some serious injuries to pivotal players throughout the campaign. Had some of them been healthy, the Cowboys would probably be in a far better position at the moment.
Next season, not this season, will be Garrett's make or break voyage.
