Last month, the New York Giants selected former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. It has put him front and center as one of the team's primary offensive weapons alongside star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
In the weeks that have followed, Barkley and Beckham Jr. have already developed a strong connection off the field that could have a significant impact on it. During a recent interview with Matt Lombardo of NJ.com, the rookie running back spoke quite highly of the Pro Bowl wideout.
“We talked about it. We talked the Giants drafting me into existence. When I used to hang out with Odell, I’d tell him; ‘I’m going to be a Giant, I want to be a Giant, I want to be a part of that team.’
“Odell's a very special player. He’s a very special person. That's the biggest thing about Odell, he’s a very special person. The things he does, and the way he prepares is really admirable.
Although Beckham Jr. is still currently in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal, he is expected to figure greatly into the equation in 2018. He is one of the league's most dynamic players, and he now has another player on board that could quickly step into a high-impact role from the get-go.
The budding relationship between them could help the Giants turn things around both on and off the field. New York displayed a tremendous amount of confidence in Barkley's ability by taking him second overall, electing to pass up on the top-projected quarterbacks that were available in this year's draft.
Nonetheless, it looks like Barkley is quickly fitting in with his new teammates as he shoots for a breakout rookie campaign in 2018.
