The Kansas City Chiefs made it clear that running back Damien Williams will be the starter going into the 2019 NFL season. Regardless, it appears running back Carlos Hyde will have an opportunity to etch out a role for himself as well.

The Chiefs have gotten an ample look at Hyde through their practices thus far. According to ESPN's Adam Teicher, he has seen plenty of work early on in the team's mandatory mini-camp.

He's a backup to Damien Williams at least for now but running back Carlos Hyde has stayed busy at Chiefs mini-camp. Hyde, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent this year, has occasionally played in the lineup with Williams and frequently has been used as a receiver out of the backfield.

The Chiefs experienced some turnover in the backfield with the departure of running back Kareem Hunt. There had been plenty of speculation regarding which player would fill the void. Hyde's arrival had only raised further questions until Kansas City expressed their confidence in Williams' ability to serve as the starter. Regardless, it appears they still have plans to utilize Hyde in the offense.

Hyde had plenty of experience serving as the bell-cow back during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, his role diminished heavily when he signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns last offseason. As a result, he was traded during the 2018 campaign to the Jacksonville Jaguars and was never able to find his footing.

Hyde appears to be in a much more generous situation in Kansas City. His versatile skill set could allow him to share touches with Williams out of the backfield moving forward.
